ALBANY, N.Y. (April 7, 2011) – On Friday, New York State Health Commissioner Nirav R. Shah, M.D., M.P.H., will speak to New York State's physicians on the transformation of health care to a new model of care and he will showcase a hospital's exemplary performance in increasing the rates of breastfeeding among new mothers.
The stops in Westchester County represent the final stops in Commissioner Shah's 6-county tour in connection with National Public Health Week, during which he is drawing attention to the State's highest public health priorities and highlighting effective local initiatives that are addressing them.

Commissioner Shah will highlight the significant health benefits to infants and mothers from exclusive breastfeeding and the critical role that hospital maternity care practices play in supporting exclusive breastfeeding. He will present an Award of Excellence to Hudson Valley Hospital Center for efforts that resulted in an increase in breastfeeding to 95 percent of mothers giving birth at the hospital.
